The children were modelling how natural selection affects population size.

Darwin observed that different characteristics between the finch species followed a pattern depending on the food available on each island. The finch species had differently shaped beaks adapted to the food in each habitat.

The children worked in groups to carry out a comparative and fair test experiment to see what would happen if the finch species had different types of beaks.

Using 2 different sized tweezers and their finger and thumb, they identified that the finger and thumb beaks would be able to survive in the new habitat.
