Year 5 visit to Martin Mere
3rd March 2025
Our Year 5 class enjoyed an exciting and educational trip to Martin Mere Wetland Centre in Lancashire. The day began with a fascinating demonstration of the water cycle, where the children saw how clouds form and took part in a group activity exploring how pollution affects water systems. This was followed by an outdoor science experiment, where they investigated how different surfaces absorb water. The children were particularly engaged in learning how wetlands play a crucial role in preventing floods by storing and filtering water.
Next, the class embarked on a guided tour of the wetland park, which ended with them watching an otter feeding session. The children were captivated as the otter keeper shared insights about their diet, habitat, and behaviours. After this, they enjoyed a creative badge-making session, carefully designing and colouring their own souvenirs to take home. In the afternoon, they took part in pond dipping, discovering a variety of insects, larvae, nymphs, and even new tadpoles. Using magnifiers and a TV screen, they examined their finds in detail before sketching the different stages of life cycles. Throughout the day, the children behaved brilliantly and showed great enthusiasm for their learning, with many commenting on how much they had discovered about wetlands and their wildlife.

The children were over the moon with this lesson!
This week, the children had a fantastic time in our science lesson learning about the phases of the moon.
Using Oreo cookies, they carefully recreated a chart showing the eight main phases, scraping away the filling to represent how the moon appears in the night sky. This fun and hands-on activity helped them to visualise and understand the lunar cycle in a memorable way.
Of course, the best part was getting to eat the cookies afterwards—a delicious end to a great lesson!
Prayer & Liturgy
13 February 2025
A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for our prayer and liturgy event.
It was a truly special and moving occasion, and we are so proud of the children for all their hard work. They spoke beautifully about their learning, sang with joy, and played their ukuleles wonderfully.
Their efforts and enthusiasm truly shone through, reflecting our school mission to ‘let the light of Jesus shine through in all we think, say, and do.’ Thanks must also go to Mrs Leung and Miss Galea for helping the children to learn the final song on the ukulele.
Crucial Crew at UCLAN
14 January 2025
Today, the children attended the 'Crucial Crew' event at the University of Central Lancashire. They took part in activities focused on health, safety, and well-being.
They participated in the "Eat Well Plate" speed test game, sorting foods into the five main groups, and learned about dental hygiene, including how to brush properly and looking at the sugar content in sweets and drinks.
Sessions on the dangers of smoking and vaping highlighted the associated health risks, while a discussion and quiz on antisocial behaviour explored its impact on individuals and communities.
The police also delivered an informative session on online safety and the importance of children understanding their digital footprint.
The children should be very proud - they contributed enthusiastically and the event leaders all said their behaviour was impeccable.
Well done Year 5 - you have had an enjoyable and educational afternoon! Be sure to ask your child about what they learned today.
Year 5’s tasty scones rise to the occasion18 October 2024 |
You'd butter believe it! This week, as part of our Design and Technology (DT) curriculum, the children have been busy designing and baking their own scones.
Yesterday, the children had the chance to mix and bake their creations. This hands-on activity allowed them to explore different techniques and understand the process of creating a recipe from scratch.
Today, the class thoroughly enjoyed doing a "taste-test" to evaluate their scones. They discussed the flavours, textures, and overall success of their designs, using their observations to reflect on what worked well and how they might improve their recipes in the future. It’s been a fun and delicious way for the children to apply their DT skills!
Year 5 Residential to Crosby Hall (CHET) - September/October 2024
2/10/24 - The children woke up after a second good night's sleep. After a hearty breakfast, they enjoyed a morning of activities on the outdoor adventure course and all had a chance to zoom down the zip wire (even the teachers had a go too!). After a final day's lunch we said our goodbyes and headed back to school. An adventurous time was had by all!

1/10/24 - The children have enjoyed a second full-packed day of activities. Last night, the children enjoyed an evening of craft and settled down with a movie night before bed. Today they were thrilled to enjoy archery and some outdoor activities such as climbing, abseiling and shelter building.
The children have behaved brilliantly and shown excellent team work, encouraging each other and being brave when faced with challenges.
30/9/24 - We have safely arrived at CHET! The children have settled into their rooms, made their beds and met the staff who will be guiding us through the activities over the next few days.
Science Lessons
This term, the children are learning about mixtures and separation. In one lesson they have been striking gold—literally!
The children have been learning all about mixtures and this week the focus was 'methods of separation'. They enjoyed a hands-on activity that explored the process of sieving soil in search of "gold nuggets."
The children also considered how different materials can be separated based on the size and properties of their particles.
